Sungrebes are super interesting birds. They are the only living bird in the Heliornis genus and have evolved webbed feet independently from other grebes and coots. They swim kind of like an Anhinga in that they can slowly sink like a submarine when they want to hide or stalk prey. Here is an interesting excerpt from Wiki:
"Sungrebes are unique among birds in that males have "pouches", folds of skin under their wings in which they carry their young from hatching until the chicks are able to swim for themselves.[6] This has led to them being called "Marsupial Birds"[7] Certain feathers, with their own musculature, serve as "guard rails" to prevent the baby from falling out."
We saw ours in the northern area of the Pantanal in Brazil on a boat ride.
