Great Skua (Stercorarius skua) - 17Feb2018 and 14Jul2017

SKUAAAA!  Skuas are prized birds on pelagic trips so when someone spots one they usually yell it out and there is something bloodcurdling about it.  The most memorable occasion for me was on a Debbie Shearwater pelagic in Monterrey Bay when she yelled it so loud in the mic that I almost crapped myself.  I think that was a South Polar Skua though.  We get both species here in NC waters. Here is a Great Skua from Feb2018 in NC waters.  Our Greats usually come in the winter with the South Polar in summer.



Here is one soaring with unbelievable scenery in the background in Iceland.  They nest there and you can see them up close.
