Pied Plover (Hoploxypterus cayanus) - 20Aug2022

These little curiosities of South America used to be called Pied Lapwings because they are more closely related to Lapwings than Plovers, but there is no denying that morphologically they resemble a Plover.  However, they are pretty distantly related to any other bird in the Family and so they were placed in their own Genus.  We saw ours in Brazil while searching the Pantanal with boats for Jaguars.
