Just when you think a shorebird can't get prettier than an American Avocet, you run into a Pied Avocet! This one was all by its lonesome on a pond in the Camargue in the south of France. This species was extirpated from Great Britain as a breeding species in 1840 and then reintroduced in 1947 and their comeback on the British Isles has been a poster child for conservation movements in Europe.
