American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) - 30Jan2016

The American Bittern is hard to find, but every once in a while you find one that does not flush and goes about it's business of hunting.  It is a beautiful thing.  They do a funny dance designed to trick their prey and then strike with lightning speed.  The song is also amazing, sounding like a giant drop of water in a echo chamber.  This one was found at Cedar Island, NC.
