Any bird with a 4-letter name is a cool bird in my book, but the Smew is especially nice. They are quite widespread throughout Europe and Asia, but most of the times I have been to Europe had been in the warmer months when this species is usually absent. It didn't take long to find one just northeast of Amsterdam when I was there on a long layover in the winter.
Smew in the waters near Amsterdam.
At the time I bagged this one in London, it didn't count because it was in the royal gardens where most of the birds have clipped wings.
