We get both White-tailed and Red-billed Tropicbird in NC waters and in fact on one pelagic I had both at the same time! This Red-billed was actually fairly close to the Hatteras inlet. The finely barred back is what differentiates this young bird from a White-tailed. Both have orange bills when juvenile or young.
