Scaup are tricky to ID. The sheen on the head can change from green to purple depending on the light. However, the shape of the head, the nail on the tip of the bill and the amount of dark markings on the sides can help formulate an ID. This one seen at Carolina Beach Lake was a Lesser Scaup based on the peaked head, the small bill nail and the dirty sides.
