The White Woodpecker is a striking pecker in the genus Melanerpes which includes 23 species. They have a pretty wide distribution in South America east of the Andes, but we only saw a few on my first trip to Brazil. It is thought that this species could be taking advantage of human altered habitats and therefor could be expanding in population although there is not much research being done on it.
