Ornate Hawk-Eagles are impressive birds from South and Central America that sit in the "booted eagle" sub-family within the larger family Accipitridae. This is because they have feathered legs (tarsus). Although our views were extremely backlit in Colombia when I first saw this species, it was not too far off and sat nicely for us scanning the forest floor for some unsuspecting large bird or small to medium mammal.
