Check out this Cicada Killer photographed here in Wilmington, NC in Sept2018. It used to be the largest wasp in North America until Japanese Wasps started showing up int he Pacific Northwest.
These Southern Two-striped Walkingsticks are pretty common at Fort Fisher in the fall, particularly near the Basin Trail. These were photographed on 10Oct2017. The smaller male rides on the back of the female. The larger female was a dark color morph which is why you can't really see the stripes.
Here is a close relative of the Cicada Killer, the Golden-reined Wasp, also photographed in Wilmington. This one on 03Jul2017.
This Limonethe maurator wasp was photographed off Governor's Rd in Brunswick county on 16Apr2022. It's amazing in today's world with so much information at our fingertips, I couldn't find much out there about this species.
