Day 16 - Serra Bonita (18Feb2026)

Serra Bonita is a forest reserve acquired by the American Bird Conservancy.  You can read about it here.

This land was strategically bought because it was one of the last remnant tracts of Atlantic Forest in the area and consequently it is rich in species diversity including some highly prized endemics.  The lodge is perched in high elevation rain forest.  Geribirding began in earnest on the lodge porch after breakfast.

Red-necked Tanager

Azure-winged Tanager

Buff-throated Saltator

Maroon-bellied Parakeet - not a Brazil endemic, but a southeast South America endemic spilling over into Argentina and Paraguay.

Long-tailed Tyrant

Black-capped Foliage-gleaner - southeast South America endemic.

Three-striped Flycatcher

Plain-winged Woodcreeper - yet another bird endemic to the Atlantic forests of southeast South America.

Plumbeous Antvireo!! A Brazilian endemic with a very limited range.

Toyota Bandeirante!  The excellent vehicle we took up and down the mountain.

Sharpbill - terrible photo of a great bird.

Atlantic Black-throated Trogon!  Not endemic to Brazil, but endemic to the Atlantic forest of the southeast.

Rufous Gnateater

Star-throated Antwren!!  This little Brazilian endemic was super hard to photograph, constantly moving.

White-collared Foliage-gleaner - southeast Brazilian endemic!

Streak-capped Antwren - very frustrating again to photograph.  These forest birds like to keep a few leaves between them and the camera.  This is another southeast Atlantic forest specialist.  It spills over into Argentina and Paraguay.

Spot-breasted Antvireo

Salvadori's Antwren!! I spotted this little bird flitting about above our heads.  A vulnerable Brazilian endemic.

Black-capped Becard female.

Pallid Spinetail! Brazilian endemic.

Swallow-tailed Manakin - a young male.

Black Hawk-Eagle!

Spot-backed Antshrike

Scale-throated Hermit!

Swallow-tailed Manakin

Pale-browed Treehunter! Brazilian endemic.

White-bibbed Antbird!  Brazilian endemic and finally a cooperative antbird!

Bahia Tyrannulet

Rufous-brown Solitaire

Mantled Hawk!

Wied's Marmoset

Spot-billed Toucanet!!

Violet-capped Woodnymph

Yellow-legged Thrush

Black-Jacobin

Collared Peccary

Plumbeous Pigeon - we heard this constantly so it was good to finally get eyes on one.

The afternoon was rainy and misty up high so we took the Bandeirante down to an overlook about half way down and it was sunny!

Social Flycatcher

Golden-chevroned Tanager

Gray-headed Tody-Flycatcher

Chestnut-backed Antshrike!!

Red-rumped Cacique

Green-headed Tanager

Sayaca Tanager

Palm Tanager

Yellow-bellied Seedeater

Chestnut-crowned Becard

Rufous-headed Tanager

Magpie Tanager

Violaceous Euphonia

I can't think of a better way to spend my 50th birthday!
