White Wings (05-06Jan2026)

What to do after birding two days straight for the Christmas Bird Counts?  Well, go birding of course.

Ruddy Turnstone at Johnnie Mercer's Pier.

A female White-winged Scoter has been hanging out at the pier lately.

At low tide, the breakwall at the south end of Wrightsville Beach hosts dozens of Purple Sandpipers.

On Tuesday I checked the pier as usual but it was slow so I headed down to the south end of WB aka Masonboro Inlet. If a dog walker hasn't been through, sometimes the gulls are still roosting.

Glaucous Gull!!  I called Sam and Jacob who were still on the pier and held onto this bird until they got there and then we all properly crushed it.

Common Loon

In the evening I went back to the north end and refound the Iceland Gull, this time much closer!

I've had both white-winged gulls on the same day on the OBX but never back home as far as I can remember.

This was kind of interesting, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull with pinkish legs!  Other than the leg color, it fits LBBG so that is what it is, but some day I will get a Slaty-backed at this beach, mark my words!

The sunset was killer!  Louie and Melissa approved.
