I was initially confused about the naming of this bird as the Glaucous Gull is white but apparently it does mean grayish blue in latin. Apparently the adult Glaucous Gulls can have a grayish blue color to their mantle although it certainly is different from this blue. Maybe the name is to help distinguish this species from the similar Blue-gray Tanager that has more of an overall blue color whereas this one has a more contrasting gray head.
