This interesting "sparrow" sits in a genus containing 22 species that are mostly brushfinches of South America. It is the only sparrow in its area with a totally black head. They can be found in Venezuela and Colombia. I photographed mine in the Santa Marta area near the El Dorado Lodge in Colombia.
