Genetic studies defined this species as being in a separate genus from the Suiriri Flycatcher in 2017. They look very similar but it turns out diverged a long time ago. They have a IUCN status of Near-threatened due to the limited range in central South America and declining populations probably mostly due to habitat loss. We had them singing and displaying in Chapada dos Guimaraes in Brazil.
