Jaeger Meister (30Nov-02Dec2017)

Today was an exceptionally good day for Jaegers seen from shore.  First some random pics from earlier in the week.

Black Scoters at Wrightsville Beach.

Water on fire but the Dunlins didn't mind.

Young male Common Eider at Johnny Mercer Pier.

Female Common Eider

This morning (Saturday) was a beehive of activity on the water at Fort Fisher.  As I pulled up to Fort Fisher, I found Sam C already scoping.

Humpback Whales were as close as I have seen from shore in NC.

This fin was interesting, could it be another species?

Then the Jaeger show began.....

There were all kinds of phases of Jaegers and most were flying south to north.

This one was bulky, could it be a Pom?

The central tail feathers projected slightly and did not appear to be pointy.  What do you think dear readers?

The base of the primary coverts were light colored and the white area in the primaries was very wide.

The rest of the birds we saw appeared to be Parasitic.  Probably 9-10 but maybe more of them.

Quite a few dark morph birds.

It's hard being a Forster's Tern.  This one was double-teamed.

The only really definitive Parasitic, with pointy central tail feathers.

The action started to slow down so we headed over to the Basin Trail.

There are now two Common Goldeneyes on the Aquarium pond.

We did flush a Sora but I was not quick enough with the camera.

Back on the way home I found a couple of cooperative Redheads at Carolina Beach Lake.

Great times.
