Ceará Gnateater or Caatinga Gnateater (Conopophaga cearae) - 06Feb2026

The Ceara Gnateater used to be part of the Rufous Gnateater complex but was split out in 2015.  The local name is "chupa-dente" or "tooth-sucker" based on the sound it makes.  It is a Brazilian endemic with a Near Threatened status per IUCN criteria mainly because of its limited range but also because that range is threatened by deforestation.  We had this one two days in a row at Pico Alto in the Guaramiranga area in eastern Brazil.  The white eyebrow can be hidden most of the time, but I got a few shots with it exposed.
