White-bellied Nothura (Nothura boraquira) - 07Feb2026

Nothuras are a group of 5 species within the larger family of Tinamous.  The White-bellied Nothura is a dry scrubland specialist with two very disjunction populations.  One is in eastern Brazil and the other straddling Bolivia and Paraguay.  We saw ours in a field down the road from our hotel in Quixadá (Hotel Pedra dos Ventos).   Our guide actually spotted it from over a mile away at the top of the hill and we drove down to get a better look.  It took a long time for it to come in this close but when it did, it was an amazing experience.  Later I found out that it wasn't that abnormal for them to come close, but it felt special at the time.
